Time is not on their side
If the only politics you followed were American, you might think that conservatives everywhere were mostly committed to halting and perhaps reversing the progress of rights for the gay community.
But they aren't. In fact, among Western countries, this is by not means the case at all. In Great Britain, there is currently a controversy because some Labour politicians have suggested that the Conservatives, or some of them, are unreconstructed homophobes. The defense comes from an openly gay senior Conservative, saying "No, we're not. We've got over that. Stop peddling hate." The Conservative leader, David Cameron, has apologised for the notorious anti-gay Section 28 legislation of the Thatcher era, saying, in so many words, "We were wrong."
What would happen in America if a senior Democrat made similar allegations about the Republican Party? Nothing. It would be utterly unremarkable, because it is simply and obviously true.
This is bound to be a losing issue for Republicans. The fact is that young people are overwhelmingly in favor of allowing same-sex marriage, and against Don't Ask Don't Tell. As time goes by, this will become the position of the vast majority of American society. No doubt people like Pat Robertson and James Dobson will continue to raise money for their religio-businesses on the strength of homophobic talk, and some Republicans will continue to try to win votes with the same. But in the end, they will lose. The time has passed when they can win more votes than they lose with these issues.
Thank God.

cucumber and avocado soup
I just made this, from foodtv.com - tastes quite good.
I made doubly quantities, in two batches - this is as much as you want in a blender.
1/2 medium cucumber
1 ripe small California avocado
1 scallion
1 garlic clove
2 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup cold water
1/2 cup ice cubes
Garnish:
2 fresh coriander sprigsPeel cucumber and cut into 4 pieces. Quarter avocado, removing pit, and peel. Cut scallion into large pieces. In a blender puree all ingredients until smooth and season with salt and pepper.
